I completed this drawing several years ago. It was a commission for a friend and coworker, a drawing of his character for the roleplaying game "Legend of the Five Rings". I was asked to draw a female samurai, in full regalia, surrounded by enemies, but still defiant. In my original sketch, her sword was broken; to me, this symbolized that she was even more dangerous, that she was willing to fight to the death. It didn't look right, though; it just made it look like she was in over her head, like she couldn't handle the situation, and this was supposed to be a strong character. So, full swords, ready to rock-and-roll.

This is one of my favorite pieces of yours. She definitely has the look of defiance you were going for, even without the broken sword.

Thanks! I was hoping that came through, and the requester seemed happy with it, especially on that note. His words: "She looks PISSED."

I can see your point about the broken sword. Good thinking. I like the detail here, I have a number of books on various armors and the samurai stuff is the most difficult to draw, although some of the later German and French designs could be pretty intricate. Baetor in Full Plate is one of my better attempts at mixing armor designs.
He expression is perfect.

Thanks for the comments. I have quite a few books on armor myself; I've been called upon to draw armor from the Bronze Age all the way up to powered armor, so I need reference material for some of it. I have to agree, samurai armor is pretty damned difficult, but that's mainly because of all the varying materials woven into the armor. You want it to all look distinct and detailed, in a way that's different from the German and French armors you mention (some of the Gothic dress plate armors are almost as detailed, what with the spikes and spines and inlay work). And your drawing of Baetor is damned good; all of the design work is easily visible there.

It's always the gothic dress plate stuff that intrigues me. As for powered sci-fi armor, the warhammer 40K stuff is the very first thing that comes to mind, but I much prefer the Bubblegum Conspiracy. Chick armor is cool.
Have you ever seen the work of Blair Reynolds? He did a bunch of sci-fi illustration work for Megatraveller. Good Stuff!

Yeah... the Gothic plate stuff always reminds me of the Gothic churches of the period (a stylistic touch that also, coincidentally, shows up in the Imperial architecture and ship design in the Warhammer 40K stuff). As for powered armor, I'm a HUGE fan, and I always think of Iron Man (as if you couldn't tell by my avatar!) The Bubblegum Crisis stuff is pretty good, too; I even used their armor as the basis for one of my NPCs in my Champions game (Sentinel).

Not familiar with Blair Reynolds, but I'm pretty familiar with most of the Traveller artists (I run the GURPS version of the game at conventions). Gonna have to check him out now!

If you're familiar with the old Traveller artists, then you've probably looked right at his stuff. He used to do a lot in Digest Group's MegaTraveller Journal. I have a couple issues.

It's good to hear there are still game groups out there. I'm running a D20 Modern/Star Wars thing based on the Gatecrash books I've published. We're talking about putting an official D20 Future supplement out for it.

I probably have. I never got into MegaTraveller the way I got into the original (my mistake, as I'm getting caught up by reading the ENTIRE run of Traveller supplements and adventures on disk), but I always thought the original had pretty spotty art (that would be the kind way to put it). Of course, they're from a different time, when the information was more important than the presentation. Still, as the Traveller franchise matured, you could see how the art did, as well.

And yeah. I've been the main GM for my group for about ten years now. Out of the six or so games we play (not counting one-shots and test sessions), I run four of them. I'm just a pushover, I suppose... "Hey, Chris... wanna run a game?" "I guess so..." **chuckles** Like I said, I also run GURPS Traveller at conventions, with a series of loosely connected adventures that change year to year.

Nice! Let me know if and when you get it done. I like the Gatecrash art I've seen in your gallery. Good attention to detail, especially, and I like the general 'feel' of it all. It's got a good 'vibe', for lack of a better word, but then again, I'm a sucker for that kind of stuff! Speaking of which... where can I find the books, if possible?

I've never been able to wrap my head around GURPS.

As for Gatecrash, the books are available through [link]

I only got into it by accident. I do artwork and run games for a small-press RPG design/publishing company, Mystic Station Designs. I was at a meeting, and it was mentioned that they sell supplements for Traveller, from a British company called BITS. Anyway, at the meeting, the question went up, "Who knows about Traveller?" I and a few others raised our hands. The next question was, "Who knows about GURPS?" I had played it years before, didn't really like it, but I knew it. Mine was the only hand raised, and the next comment was, "Thanks for volunteering." In simpler language, Captain, they drafted me! **chuckles**

Thanks for the link... gonna try to pick them up aftermy next paycheck.
